The Christmas holidays 🎄 are a time for sharing precious moments with the family and taking part in activities with the kids. But with so much to spend at the end of the year, it’s not always easy to keep the whole family entertained without blowing the budget.

Luckily, in Haute-Vienne, you can take advantage of free activities for young and old, and experience the magic of Christmas without breaking the bank. Whether it’s outdoor outings or cultural moments in the warmth, here are some ideas for free outings to make the most of your Christmas holidays! ✨

1. Experience the magic of Christmas in Limoges

Feast your eyes and have fun

For a magical end to the afternoon, come to Limoges to see the Christmas lights, and enjoy free activities to delight the children. The 2025 edition promises memorable moments of fun, with a large roller-skating track and toboggan slides. Who’s going to strike the funniest pose or take the most “kawaii” selfie 🤳 in front of the big illuminated bear or the penguins on skis?

Don’t miss Murmures d’étoiles at the Basilica of Saint Michel des Lions: a new sparkling light show projected onto the façade every evening 😍. You’ll be amazed by these giant, poetic images – you know, that magical moment when children are left speechless 😉

Santa Claus 🎅🏻 will be there, of course! You can also admire the Christmas decorations as you stroll around the town centre (Place Denis Dussoubs, Place Jourdan, Place de la République…) Treat yourself to some precious (and free!) family time throughout December.

2. Breathe in the magic of Limousin!

Family nature walks

Need to get moving between two hot chocolates? Put on your walking boots and head off with the whole family to enjoy the winter beauty of the Limousin! 🥾

From the summit of Mont Gargan to the soothing landscapes of the Millevaches and Périgord Limousin Regional Nature Parks, to the tranquil shores of our lakes, the trails of the Haute-Vienne invite you to marvel. ✨

Follow an interpretation trail, observe nature as it sleeps… A free, rejuvenating getaway for young and old alike! 😌

3. Keep the little elves busy with free Christmas activities

throughout Haute-Vienne

In Haute-Vienne, December is all about magic and children’s smiles. Everywhere, villages and towns come alive to make the eyes of the youngest shine. 🤩

Put on your rollerblades on the ephemeral gliding track in Eymoutiers, hurtle down the toboggan run in Limoges… or share a creative workshop as a family! 🛷

Christmas shows, fairy tales, puppets, magic, board games… there’s no shortage of free entertainment to keep young and old alike dreaming! 🪄

Experience the spirit of Christmas together, without breaking the piggy bank, in the heart of a warm and festive Limousin. 🎄

4. Go on a treasure hunt

with Terrà Aventura

Young and old, we ALL love treasure hunts! With Terra Aventura, geocaching made in Limousin, it’s easy and free to go on a family adventure. 🗝️

Our tip for the festive season: the “Logeons-nous dans les bois” cache in Saint-Priest-sous-Aixe. Children will be delighted to collect everything they need along the way to make beautiful 100% natural Christmas decorations, or to try their hand at land art on the spot 🪵.

If you haven’t already done so, download and install the free app on your smartphone, and the 70 fun discovery trails in Haute-Vienne will be yours! 🎯

Psst, for walks with the little ones, the shorter routes, accessible by pushchair, are marked with a pictogram 😉

5. Christmas markets

throughout Haute-Vienne

Christmas markets are also great opportunities to get some fresh air and take a stroll with the family. Free entertainment is often on offer, including music, games and more. Not forgetting the traditional meeting with Santa Claus, which is always a treat for the whole family. 🧑‍🎄

Strolling through the heart of the towns and villages of the Limousin, taking the time to admire the illuminations in the narrow streets, rediscovering the beautiful old facades, is one of the simple pleasures that are also part of the magic of Christmas. ☃️

6. Deciphering the mysteries of the forest

at the arboretum in La-Jonchère-Saint-Maurice

The Office National des Forêts, which manages the Jonchère Saint-Maurice Arboretum, has had the good idea of creating a free app to help you visit this magnificent heritage site. 🍃

You can use your phone to follow the discovery trail and find information on each of the 160 species that inhabit the arboretum. As well as identifying the trees, the app provides numerous photos of them in all seasons and explanations of their history, flowering, etc. 🌲

The walk takes around 1? hours. A great way to get some fresh air and learn about the trees that surround us. 🚶‍➡️

The “Arboretum de la Jonchère 87” app is available on the App Store platform and also available for Android. 📱

7. Free exhibitions over Christmas

and discover the art and know-how of Limousin with your family

What if Christmas was also a time to marvel at creativity? During the December holidays, take your family to the galleries of the Haute-Vienne! Take advantage of the free exhibitions to introduce your children to the art and fire arts emblematic of the Limousin… 🔥

Our selection of exhibitions for Christmas: 👀

  • Christelle Derenne‘s enamel creations, where material and light mingle in a subtle dialogue between fire and nature.
  • The poetic world of Jane Harris at the FRAC-Artothèque: her canvases blend geometry and softness, inspired by local landscapes.
  • The woven works ofAmandine Blanchet, where dried flowers and threads come together to tell the story of the beauty of life.
