Eco-responsible events in Limousin

“Please leave this place as you found it”. We’re all familiar with this phrase, which becomes even truer in Limousin! Our landscapes are preserved, and it’s a priority to prove that festivities can rhyme with ecology! Here are several green events that will leave their mark on our memories, but not on our beautiful planet 🌍
At a glance

1. Surpassing yourself in the water and on land

at Swimrunman in Vassivière - June

And how are your lungs? 😮‍💨

Because they’re going to have to be well hung to take part in the Vassivière Swimman in Limousin! “Koh Lanta” would be like a walk in the park for these athletes, from all over France, ready to brave dry land and cool waters without ever losing their breath.

The concept is simple, but tough: in pairs, you run, swim, run and swim again… all the way to the finish line!

Last year, over 600 brave souls took up the challenge. Some to push their limits, others just to be able to say at the coffee machine on Monday morning: “Me, this weekend? Oh, nothing, I just did a little Swimman.”🌊

But the Swimman isn’t just a battle against yourself and your burning legs, it’s also a beautiful declaration of love to nature. The green event makes a point of preserving its playground: eco-responsible refreshments, zero plastic, and total respect for the surrounding lakes and forests.

2. An XXL playground

at XTERRA in Vassivière - June

Forget peaceful races and Sunday rides, this is wild sport, pure adrenaline, and a good dose of mud to spice things up 💦

On the program? Open water swimming in the magnificent Vassivière lake, mountain biking on trails as beautiful as they are unforgiving, and finally, a run that will let you discover nature… up close and personal. No smooth asphalt, just bumpy trails, stinging climbs and descents where you’ll need chamois reflexes.

But the XTERRA isn’t just about suffering in a picture-postcard setting. It’s also an electric atmosphere, a community of enthusiasts who combine competition and camaraderie, and a genuine philosophy of respect for nature. The organization makes it a point of honor to minimize its ecological footprint: responsible signposting, plastic-free refuelling and raising awareness of the need to preserve the lake and its surroundings. Now that’s sustainable tourism! 🌿

3. Music in nature

at the Festival du Haut-Limousin in Villefavard - August

Gone are the days of aseptic concert halls: here, music resonates in the heart of the countryside or in a restored barn 🎵

This festival offers a rich and surprising musical palette: classical music of course, but also vibrant jazz, world music and contemporary creations. The artists, whether young talents or established figures, share a common passion: bringing the audience closer to the music, in a warm, intimate atmosphere. And believe us, listening to a string quartet under the vaults of the Grange de Villefavard is an experience that sends shivers down your spine 😯

And as the beauty of the setting is an integral part of the show, the festival is also committed to an eco-responsible approach. Preserving the nature that surrounds these open-air concerts, encouraging short circuits for the meals on offer and limiting waste, it’s a score that the organization plays to perfection.

4. Full speed ahead!

at the Carrioles festival in Flavignac - August

Here, no asphalt, no concrete, just a festival in the middle of nature where eco-responsibility rhymes with festivities 🛞

Les Carrioles is three days where the sound of horns is swapped for that of percussion, fast fashion is replaced by a craft market and shows are performed under the stars.

It all begins on the shores of Lac Saint-Fortunat, an idyllic setting for exhibitors, artists and festival-goers celebrating art, recycling and good cheer. Stroll between the stalls of local producers, marvel at the creations made from everyday objects, and let yourself be carried away by the unique atmosphere of this committed event.

And because an ecological festival without music is like a cart without wheels, the program alternates between vibrant concerts and artistic performances. During the day, we learn, exchange and discover, and in the evening, we dance under the stars.

In short, Les Carrioles is the eco-festival you’ll leave with a head full of ideas… and maybe even some jewelry made from recycled capsules on your wrist ♻️

5. Where stories come to life

At the

Forget streaming platforms and podcasts, here, stories are heard by the lake of Vassivière. Since 1995, Paroles de Conteurs has been transforming the end of summer into a wonderful journey, where every word becomes an open door to the imaginary ✨

For seven days, let yourself be drawn into storytelling strolls, where the shadows of twilight add a touch of mystery to the tales. Settle in comfortably for a storytelling siesta, where the artists’ voices lull you into a gentle blend of reverie and poetry. Stop by the cont’oir, a place where you can enjoy stories as much as drinks, and thrill to the open stages, where seasoned storytellers and young talents share the stage with passion.

And because telling the story of the world also means preserving it, the festival makes a point of limiting its environmental impact. Here, in an unspoilt natural setting, stories become reality.
