In reality, he was born on 15 April 1936 in Masbaraud-Mérignat, a small village in the Creuse region around thirty kilometres away. But he lived most of his life in Saint-Léonard de Noblat in Haute-Vienne, which he considered to be his true home town. It was here that he died on 13 November 2019.

Born in a small neighbouring village in Creuse, it was in Saint-Léonard de Noblat in Haute-Vienne that ‘Poupou’ chose to live most of his life, making this medieval town his true heartland.

Having died in 2019, France’s most popular cycling champion continues to attract thousands of visitors who come to pay their respects and discover the places that marked his daily life.

Here, Raymond Poulidor trained on the hilly roads of the Limousin, raised his family, cycled to get his baguette and enjoyed an andouillette at his regular table at the ResTaureau….

Before Poupou, Saint-Léonard already had its champion: Gay-Lussac (1778-1850)! This Miaulétou chemist revolutionised science with his laws on the expansion of gases. The scientist’s museum awaits you in the town centre during the summer (free admission)! ⚗️

Why isn’t there a Raymond Poulidor museum? When he was alive, the champion refused the idea out of modesty. After his death, his family respected his wishes. But Saint-Léonard de Noblat cultivates its memory in a different way, with authenticity and emotion. ✨

On the façade of the tourist office, a colourful fresco pays tribute to Raymond Poulidor. It’s impossible to miss! Created in 2023 by artist Sêma Lao to celebrate the start of the Tour de France, it immortalises the legendary Poulidor-Anquetil duel in the Puy de Dôme in 1964, while also winking at the town’s medieval heritage. A must-see photo spot for all cycling fans! 📸

In the historic centre, a permanent exhibition can be visited under Les Halles, a wooden statue represents him in front of the town hall and a commemorative plaque honours him in the Jardin du Souvenir where his ashes are laid to rest. Simple and touching places to pay tribute to Poupou, in the image of his humble and generous personality. 🙏
