7 ways to recognise a true Haut-Viennois

Being from Haute-Vienne means more than just living here. It’s a state of mind. If you recognise yourself (or someone else) in the following, chances are you’re a pure product of Haute-Vienne.

1. A porcelain expert, he checks the origin of the plates by lifting them before eating.

A true Haut-Viennois doesn’t mess around with his crockery.

Even before biting into his Limousinth piece of meat, he takes the time to gently lift the porcelain plate to make sure it’s made in Limoges.

Yes, just a small gesture, but one that speaks volumes: here, quality and heritage come first. And if, by some misfortune, the plate is imported from elsewhere… he’ll keep smiling, but in his mind, it’s a regional tragedy 😄

2. He has a mushroom patch and swears to you that

Every self-respecting Haut-Viennois has his or her own little secret spot in the forest, where porcini mushrooms and girolles grow as if by magic.

And be warned, they’ll tell you with unshakeable seriousness: “Nobody knows about it! Even if you’ve lived in the village all your life, it’s out of the question to share the exact address. Here, picking is almost an art, and discretion is an age-old tradition 😏

If he shares his corner with you, it’s because he considers you a member of his family.

3. He once said:

A true Haut-Viennois never complains about the lack of beaches. No, they know that the lakes do the job just as well. No beaches crowded with tourists, no salt that irritates the eyes. Our lakes let you relax without a beach ball waking you up from your siesta 🏖️

He repeats it proudly, almost like an official slogan: “We don’t have the sea, but we have the lakes!

And you can be sure that afterwards he’ll tell you which one is the most beautiful, the quietest, the most secret… and will probably give you a few addresses of lakes and rivers where you swim.

4. He knows a shortcut... which lasts longer, but it's nicer.

The real Haut-Viennois has a very particular sense of efficiency: it knows the famous “shortcut” which, in theory, should save you time. Except that in practice… it always takes longer.

But never mind! Every diversions is a little wonder to behold: a tree-lined path, a beautiful viewpoint, a forgotten stone bridge…

Here, the important thing is never to arrive quickly, but to take your time and savour every moment 😏

5. He knows village festivals by heart... and the vocabulary that goes with them

Between chestnut festivals, farmers’ markets, traditional dances, the “frairie des petits ventres“, ostentations and the bar that opens too early, the Haut-Viennois is in his element.

He takes the opportunity to bring out a few of his own words: pochon, pétarou, pichet, bouérer, adi… without wondering if everyone understands.

Here, traditions are lived, eaten and passed on naturally, often around a big table… because the locals are good with a fork!

6. He knows he has the most beautiful station in France

There’s no point arguing with him: the most beautiful station in France is in Limoges, full stop.

Any attempt at comparison is futile, any competition immediately irrelevant. He says it calmly, sometimes with a smile, but his conviction is total.

And deep down, even if you’re not an architecture expert, it’s hard not to recognise that there’s a serious argument here… just look at the photo opposite! 😌

7. He claims that the real madeleines are at Saint-Yrieix.

Here, the madeleine is not just a cake, it’s a real local pride.

He’ll always tell you which one he prefers, why and where to find them. A word of advice: listen to him all the way, it’s almost as important as the tasting 😄

Covered in chocolate, filled with strawberry, flavoured with lemon or plain, the Haut-Viennois will be able to sell you the madeleine as if he’d been in the family business for three generations.
