Mont GarganThe Mont Gargan
A majestic site overlooking the Haute-Vienne
Culminating at 731 metres, the Mont Gargan offers an exceptional panorama over the Millevaches plateau, the Monédières massif and as far as the Auvergne volcanoes.
Walk along the avenue of hundred-year-old beech trees and enjoy the splendid view around the remains of the chapel, amid heather moorland and peat bogs. Breathe in the spirit of the Resistance at this emblematic site of commitment against the Nazi occupiers. The wind winding through the stones still seems to whisper the “Chant des Partisans”.
ARE YOU A WALKER, YOUNG OR OLD?
To discover this majestic monument, you can choose between a 2.2km discovery trail for a 1h walk… or a 4h45 hike with a complete 19km tour of the Mont Gargan. Younger visitors can try their hand at the geocaching game “La bataille du Mont Gargan” with the Terra Aventura app.

Viaduc de Rocherolles - @sly_drone17 interpretation trails to discover
Interpretation trails are the best way to discover the wealth of local flora and fauna. There are no fewer than 17 themed trails in the Haute-Vienne. Here are a few of our favourites:
- At Aixe-sur-Vienne, the Vienne Valley is told in an original and fun way by the talking stick and the talking canoe.
- Around Viaduc de Rocherolles, botanists will find 34 species of flowers, trees and shrubs to discover on a 1km trail along the banks of the Gartempe.
- At the Sentier Conservatoire de la Châtaigne (Chestnut Conservation Trail) in Dournazac, you can learn all about the chestnut, nicknamed “the breadfruit of the Limousin”: its history, cultivation and varieties, as well as the art of preparing it.
- In Rochechouart, you can follow the geological trail of the meteorite that crashed into the Limousin 200 million years ago, forming a crater over 20 km in diameter…
