Ready for the opening of trout fishing? 🐟

From the second Saturday in March to the third Sunday in September, head to the Haute-Vienne to discover our 5 not-to-be-missed spots for stalking fario or rainbow trout, between crystal-clear waters and the wild landscapes of the Limousin.

Whether you’re a beginner or a keen angler, get your reels out and let the adventure begin! 🎣

Quick overview

1. The Vienne

1st and 2nd category rivers in Haute-Vienne

As connoisseurs know, the Vienne is THE famous trout river of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region! With its source at an altitude of almost 900m in the heart of the Millevaches plateau, this river is renowned for the quality of its water and the presence of numerous species of fish, not least the famous fario trout! 🐟

So get your fishing gear ready and head to Limousin to meet Dame Fario. Our tip: the areas around Saint-Léonard de Noblat and Eymoutiers, between gorges, riffles and deep areas. 🎣

ℹ️ Good to know: in 2nd category, the opening period for rainbow trout fishing is longer than that for brown trout: the colourful salmonid awaits you from 1 January to 26 January and from 22 September to 31 December 2025 ☺️

2. La Combade

1st category wild fish river

Looking for an intimate fishing spot, away from the most heavily fished areas? Set your sights on the Combade! This lively river undulates for around forty kilometres through a rural slope with little human presence. There are virtually no roads along the river: access points are limited to a handful of bridges! 🤫

Winding its way through the peaceful meadows of the Limousin, the river alternates between narrow wooded areas and flatter, more open configurations, offering hollow banks as well as deep spots. While Mayflies and other mayflies flit about… Didn’t we already tell you that an angler’s paradise was in Limousin? 💚

The best part? The Combade lends itself to all trout fishing techniques: toc with natural bait, nymph, dry, lures… And you’re going to need technique, because the Combade trout have character! 😉

3. Le Taurion

2nd category rivers east of Limoges

Born on the plateau of Millevaches, the Taurion travels 125 km between Creuse and Haute-Vienne before joining the Vienne downstream of Limoges.

Its waters, which are sometimes calm and sometimes fast, feed dams that are popular with carp anglers… and are home to an interesting population of salmonids! 😀

It’s in the village of Saint Priest Taurion that we invite you to put down your clogs and enjoy the 2.9km leisure course. Easy to access for novice anglers, it boasts two rainbow trout releases. The perfect way to introduce your kids to fishing! 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

4. La Couze

1st category fish river, downstream of the Saint Pardoux lake

A tributary of the Saint Pardoux lake, the Couze rises in the Monts d’Ambazac at an altitude of 600 metres. 🧭

This is one of the most beautiful rivers in the department and one of the best spots to meet dame fario. As well as great catches, you’re guaranteed to recharge your batteries with its arms winding through meadows, trees and rocks. The river is also dotted with wooden footbridges, stone bridges, torrents and mills. 😍

🪧 [PRACTICAL INFO] What are the rules for trout fishing in Haute-Vienne? No more than 6 trout may be caught per day and per angler. Catch and release is compulsory for all fario trout under 23 cm but there is no minimum size for rainbow trout. 🎣

5. The Boisserie fly-fishing reservoir

Étang de la Boisserie at Peyrilhac, north-west of Limoges

Our selection finishes with a 2-hectare stretch of water that’s sure to delight fly fishermen! 🤩

Situated 20 km north of Limoges, this fly-fishing reservoir for salmonids is regularly stocked throughout the year: fario trout, rainbow trout, brook salmon… So you can be sure of catching a fly 😉

ℹ️ Please note that access to the pond requires an optional extra on top of your fishing licence. Free fishing is allowed, except from the end of April to the end of September: one salmonid per day.
