The site of the former Marcognac kaolin quarries was classified as an Industrial Archaeology Historic Monument in 2002. It is the only quarry in France where buildings dating back to the 19th century (dwellings, dryers, forge, stables, bread oven, etc.) still stand, bearing witness to an activity that lasted 200 years. The site was bought by the commune of Saint Yrieix-la-Perche in 1993 and taken over by the Communauté de Communes in 2000. In 2010, the Marcognac Terre de Porcelaine association was created to save this abandoned site and give it a new lease of life. The tour itinerary was gradually created by donating objects and archives received from various people. Passionate members of the association lead guided tours, documented by testimonials, images and period objects.
