Imposing is the word that springs to mind! Built to plans by Roger Gonthier, on the grounds of a former Benedictine convent, the building is the pride of the Limousin community. Since 1929, the huge 31-metre-high dome and its adjoining campanile, which rises 61 metres above the ground, have stood guard over the city, topped by their copper hat. Step into the great hall and look up: in addition to Henri Varenne's magnificent allegorical sculptures, Francis Chigot's art-deco stained-glass windows take on their luminous value here.
