Living the pastThe martyred village of Oradour

Immersion in history

On June 10, 1944, the population of the Limousin village of Oradour-sur-Glane was massacred by a troop of SS waffen. The Centre de la Mémoire explains this terrible event to visitors.

A city
full of history

On June 10, 1944, the population of the Limousin village of Oradour-sur-Glane was massacred by a troop of around 200 SS waffen. The men were separated from the women and children and executed simultaneously in several enclosed areas of the town. The women and children were locked in the church and massacred by gas, grenades and other explosives, before being machine-gunned. The church was then set on fire, and the looted village burned to the ground, reduced in a matter of hours to a field of ruins.

DID YOU KNOW?
Preserved in its original state, this site bears witness to Nazi atrocities since the liberation, and to the need for remembrance, as a tribute to the 643 victims of a despicable crime.

The Centre
of Memory

There are memories we wish had never happened. As part of our duty to remember, and to ensure that this event never happens again, the Centre de la mémoire et de recueillement is a place to reflect on the atrocity of war. The Centre de la mémoire is not a museum in the usual sense of the word, but a place for information and meditation.

Access to the village

The Martyr Village is open 7 days a week from January 15 to December 14, at the same times as the Centre de la mémoire.

Free access to the Martyr’s Village through the entrance hall of the Centre de la mémoire.
