Time travel: discover the Limousin of yesteryear

It’s an immersion in the Limousin way of life of yesteryear! With its inhabitants determined not only to preserve traces of the past, but also to pass them on, Haute-Vienne has a number of places where you can relive its customs and traditions, and discover its know-how. Villages, museums and folk festivals await you!

Montrol-Sénard, an authentic Limousin village

Rescued and staged by local volunteers, this village presents daily life at the beginning of the 20th century. The “Nostalgie Rurale” (Rural Nostalgia) trail through the village will take you to 17 authentic sites: the “Chabatz d’entrar “* house with its cowshed, the bakehouse, the washhouse, the village school, the shoemaker’s workshop and many more…

THE NOT-TO-BE-MISSED EVENT?

Take part in the dictée du certif’ in the classrooms of the local school, just like in 1900. This annual event will take place on July 16, 2023, with the Bernard Pivot dictation.

Rural life in the past

René Baubérot Museum in Châteauponsac

Becoming a “Musée de France” in 2023, it provides an introduction to local history. Housed in the village’s former priory, the museum presents, among other things, scenes from 19th-century life, with all the objects and clothing from everyday life at the time. Handicrafts play an important role, with a large collection of tools and reconstructed workshops, such as the basket-making workshop. You’re free to continue your journey back to Gallo-Roman times…

Land of know-how

Travelling back in time also means discovering the ancestral skills that have survived in Haute-Vienne.

Le Moulin du Got

This 15th century paper mill has been restored with the help of the town of Saint-Léonard de Noblat. Open to the public for 20 years, it bears witness to the region’s rich paper-making past. Paper is still made here in an environmentally-friendly way. You’ll also discover the printing workshop. A linotype demonstration will transport you back to the days of Gutenberg. Workshops for children and adults are also offered throughout the year.

The Hemp and Glove Museum

In Cognac-la-Forêt, the Patrimoine association has created this museum to present two traditional Limousin activities: hemp growing in the 19th century, and the history of luxury glove-making in Saint-Junien.

The origins of Limoges porcelain

Our region's best-known expertise, but there are also places where you can find out more about the life of the workers. Here's what we have to offer.

Marcognac, land of porcelain

It was near Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche that one of the first veins of kaolin was discovered, an essential element in the manufacture of porcelain. In Marcognac, the buildings near the old quarry have been preserved. Take a guided tour and learn about the daily tasks performed by men and women to extract kaolin, and thus participate in the boom in Limoges porcelain manufacture in the 19th century.

    Casseaux kiln museum

The Casseaux kiln is the symbol of the Limoges porcelain industry, and the last remaining reverse-flame kiln in France. In the early 1900s, at the height of the industry, there were over a hundred porcelain kilns on the banks of the Vienne River in Limoges. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1987, the guided tour, led by a team of enthusiasts, will take you on a journey back in time, and tell you all about the human and technical prowess of the porcelain industry’s history.

      Gastronomy and traditions

The traditional folk festival of the Frairie des Petits Ventres in Limoges originally, in the Middle Ages, brought together the stalls of the city’s butchers and tripe-makers. It takes place every year on the 3rd Friday of October in the heart of Limoges, in the Rue de la Boucherie. You’ll still find the popular Limousin dishes: chestnut puddings, pâté de pommes de terre, galetous and other flognardes.
