The soul of Limousin in its alleyways

Stroll through our typical alleyways

How about a few detours in Limousin? If you love cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and the history of old neighborhoods… Come along and enjoy the atmosphere of the heart of our towns, where the soul of Limousin is to be found!

The Boucherie district

Take a stroll through this historic district of Limoges, and discover its astonishing history with the “Nouvelle Aquitaine” videoguide app.
It’s called  “de la boucherie” (the butcher’s district) because this is where butchers and tripe-makers set up shop at the time, away from the upper-class neighborhoods. Take the time to stop and admire the details and shopfronts of this picturesque street, with its traditional timber-framed facades. In the little square, your eye is drawn to a cute little chapel: the chapelle Saint-Aurélien, erected by the butchers’ guild. Imagine how lively it used to be here, enjoying the scenery from the terrace of a café, or the peace and quiet of the secret Place de la Barreyrrette.

To find out more about this brotherhood of butchers, don’t hesitate to push open the door of the Maison de la boucherie. This district is the cradle of our gastronomy and our traditional tripe recipes, an invitation to visit the nearby Halles😉

DID YOU KNOW?
Place de la Barreyrrette, located behind the butchers’ houses, takes its name from the barricades (barreyrrettas) that enclosed the pens where the animals were kept. Today, it’s an almost-secret place, surrounded by half-timbered houses.

From Saint-Yrieix

Saint Yrieix la Perche, a whole history to be told by the stones…

The medieval town opens onto the Place Attane, dominated by the collegiate church of Moustier. Can you see the tower right next to it? It’s the famous Tour du Plô! A 13th-century keep belonging to the Viscounts of Limoges, it invites you to take a stroll down picturesque lanes lined with beautiful white stone and half-timbered townhouses.
A local treasure for heritage lovers: an illuminated Bible from the 12th century, on display at the cultural center.

Don’t miss the Marché-Poterne district and its market street, and take advantage of the Moulinassou gardens for a relaxing break on the banks of the Couchou. It’s the perfect place to sample the famous Bijou madeleine, which, like the rest of us, you’ll go completely mad about!

Did you know that it was also in Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche that, in 1768, the wife of pharmacist Darnet discovered a white clay she used to make her washing powder? In fact, it was kaolin, the essential raw material for the manufacture of Limoges porcelain.
