GOOD TO KNOW
The Mont Gargan was classified as a national natural monument and site in 1983, in order to preserve its exceptional heritage. It is also part of the departmental network of nature and discovery areas, and is a site of landscape interest in the Millevaches Regional Nature Park in Limousin.
1. The Mont Gargan discovery trail
2.2 km - 1hAlong this discovery trail laid out by the Département de la Haute-Vienne, visitors are invited to explore the many natural, cultural and historical treasures of the Mont Gargan. Heath dotted with heather, majestic avenue of hundred-year-old beech trees, 19th-century religious relics, memorial stones, etc.: these are just some of the treasures to be found on this unique walk in the heart of the Limousin.
2. In the footsteps of the Maquis
12.5 km - 3h15From the village of La Croisille-sur-Briance, embark on a walk in the footsteps of Georges Guingouin‘s maquisards. This hike, rich in history, will reveal superb panoramas of the Millevaches plateau in the heart of the Limousin. Along the way, you’ll also have the opportunity to reach the majestic Mont Gargan.

In the summer of 1940, a handful of men led by Georges Guingouin, a schoolteacher and political activist, began maquis actions: ambushes, sabotage, leaflet distribution… The Germans feared this region, which they called “Little Russia”.
GOOD TO KNOW In 1969, two burials with stone chests were discovered: a cubic chest and an irregular polygonal chest around which offerings were placed. These included 6 plates, 4 bowls, 5 bowls, 1 cup, goblets, bronze rings and more. These objects can be seen at the Saint-Méard town hall, and the chests are on display on the school lawn near the town hall.
3. The Puy de Grammont circuit
8.6 km - 2h10The Puy de Grammont walk invites you to discover the picturesque landscapes of the Limousin bocage. Heritage enthusiasts will be delighted by the treasures along the way: washhouse, bread oven and the remarkable Échizadour tower. An authentic getaway in the heart of the countryside, ideal for nature and history lovers.
4. Le Puy du Thé
8 km -2hTake a stroll through the heart of the Limousin and marvel at the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Not far away is the famous Mont Gargan. Along the way, discover the village, its picturesque hamlet, its church and the magnificent Château de Neuvic. This short, accessible circuit will delight both occasional and experienced hikers.

The Limousin family built the present-day Château de Neuvic in 1890 on the remains of a 16th-century château. In the mid-20th century, it housed the departmental nursery school. Today, it houses a home for disabled adults.

The Statue of Liberty is Châteauneuf la Forêt’s war memorial. At 2.90 meters tall, it is one of the largest replicas of sculptor Bartholdi’s “Liberté éclairant le monde” (Liberty Enlightening the World), presented by the French people to the American people for the centenary of American Independence.
5. Between architecture and nature
4.7 km - 2hNot far from Mont Gargan, discover Châteauneuf-la-Forêt on an urban stroll ideal for families. Admire the Statue of Liberty, the Art Deco François-Bariaud house, the church, the park and the former home of Jane Limousin. Along the way, enjoy charming views of the Limousin.
