Oradour-sur-Glane, once a peaceful and prosperous village in the Limousin region, became part of history on June 10, 1944. On that day, 200 soldiers of the Das Reich division surrounded Oradour and rounded up the population. All were killed and burned, claiming 643 innocent victims. Only 6 people escaped the massacre and were able to testify. The ruins of the martyred village still bear witness to the atrocious barbarity. The Centre de la Mémoire, with its exhibition rooms, invites us to reflect.
Construction of the new village was completed in 1953. Today, Oradour is a bustling rural center, with shops and associations bringing life to the village. A triptych is available from the Tourist Office to find out more about this reconstruction, as well as a Terra Aventura trail.
