To reach Pierre-Buffière, you have to cross a bridge or viaduct.
the "pont de l'hermitage" (or "pont de la recluse") because a hermit (or recluse) lived nearby in a chapel built in the 14th century, but it is more commonly known as the "pont vieux" (old bridge) because it was on the north/south route linking Limoges to Brive, via Pierre-Buffière, before the route was changed to the "pont Neuf" (new bridge). This Gothic obtuse-arched bridge, built in the 12th century over the Briance river at the confluence with the Blanzou, was repaired several times following flood damage. The first viaduct built between 1888 and 1891 in local stone to cross the Briance valley was the railway viaduct on the Paris-Toulouse line.
