Maucloup is without doubt the most representative village in the Monts d'Ambazac. It has retained its character thanks to its Merchant houses, the oldest of which date back to the 15th century. They are the legacy of the extraordinary skills of the Creuse masons. Some feature awnings and external staircases. They are often accompanied by wells, remarkable for their monolithic granite coping stones and imposing dimensions (one is 1.80 m wide).
