In the 14th century, during the era of the popes in Avignon, many ecclesiastics, particularly from the Limousin region, enjoyed brilliant careers. Such was the case of Pierre Gauvain, a native of Mortemart. Bishop of Viviers and Auxerre, he became a cardinal at the court of Avignon. His will of 1335 provided for the foundation of three convents in Mortemart, including a convent of Carmelite friars and a hospital for the poor. The current buildings, rebuilt in the late 17th and first half of the 18th centuries, are vast and imposing.
