In the 14th century, during the era of the popes in Avignon, many ecclesiastics, particularly from the Limousin region, enjoyed brilliant careers. Such was the case of Pierre Gauvain, a native of Mortemart. Bishop of Viviers and Auxerre, he became a cardinal at the court of Avignon.
