It was the home of Théodore Haviland, son of David Haviland, famous American importer of European porcelain. After managing the porcelain sales house ?Haviland et Cie? in New York for ten years, Théodore moved to Ambazac in 1875. He rented the former château, which had belonged to the Montcocu and Villelume families since the 11th century. The property was finally purchased in 1883 and renamed Montméry. Today, no trace remains of the former medieval château. Adopting an eclectic American East Coast style, the château was completely rebuilt between 1885 and 1889. Construction was entrusted to Richard Morris Hunt (1827-1895), the American architect best known for designing the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. A magnificent park was designed 5 years later by Edouard André. Private, no visits
