Arriving at one of France’s most beautiful and famous railway stations, the Gare des Bénédictins, may be your first introduction to the Haute-Vienne region. Voted France’s most beautiful railway station in 2022, Limoges is also a popular tourist destination for film-makers and advertisers. It has served as a dream setting for Chanel and Audrey Tautou, as well as numerous feature film shoots.

Since 1929, the huge 31-metre-high dome and its adjoining campanile, which rises 61 metres above the ground, have stood guard over the city, topped by a copper hat. If you’re passing through the station, step into the main hall and look up: in addition to Henri Varenne’s magnificent allegorical sculptures, Francis Chigot’s art-deco stained-glass windows come into their own here.
