Henri MATISSE: Nostalgia for the Golden Age - Le bonheur de vivre or The Joy of Living
Le Bonheur de vivre occupies a pivotal position in Matisse?s career, and more generally in the history of modern art.
Matisse was already 36 when he undertook this painting, in which he condensed much of his experience gained from contact with the moderns of the late 19th century and, at the same time, elaborated the main lines of his future work. This painting has become all the more mythical for the fact that the Barnes Foundation, which owns it, long prohibited reproductions and refused loans until the 1980s. Le bonheur de vivre was shown at the Musée d?Orsay in 1993-94.
