Star rating of accommodation

Star rating is optional and can be requested for the following types of accommodation: hotels, campsites, leisure parks, tourist residences, vacation villages, furnished tourist accommodation and group inns.

Introduction to classification

The classification assesses the level of comfort of the facilities and the quality of the services offered in the establishment, as well as practices in terms of respect for the environment and welcoming customers with disabilities.

It is expressed in stars, ranging from 1 to 5* (except for collective inns, which have a single classification). It is valid for 5 years, and is renewable by the same procedure. Classification is awarded following a visit by an accredited firm. A fee is charged for this procedure.

To keep pace with customer demands and societal issues (sustainable development, etc.), classification grids are revised every 5 years.

Why classify my accommodation?

  • Reassure customers: at a time when false advertisements for accommodation are circulating on the Internet, and there is great diversity in terms of accommodation quality, classification enables customers to assess the level of quality of the accommodation they are looking for, as well as the various services they will have access to.
  • Evaluate your establishment: as an owner, classification enables you to know precisely the strengths and weaknesses of your establishment in relation to your customers’ expectations.
  • Simplify calculation of tourist tax: the rate is no longer calculated as a percentage of the rental price. The tourist tax rate is now a fixed rate, to be applied per night and per person (the rate varies according to the classification level and the local authority to which you belong – contact your local Tourist Office).

Good to know:

  • All classified accommodations (excluding meublés de tourisme) can be found on the Atout France website.
  • For meublés de tourisme (gîtes, seasonal apartments), a dedicated page on the classification process can be consulted 👉 HERE

Stages in the classification process

1- I create my account on the Atout France website

2 – I contact my local Tourist Office to find out more and receive free support in my classification process.

3 – I order my inspection visit from an accredited organization

4 – I send my pre-diagnosis online to the chosen inspection body

5 – The inspection body carries out the on-site visit

6 – The organization sends the inspection certificate within 15 days.

7 – The inspection certificate must be validated by the owner and then sent to Atout France.

8 – Atout France sends the classification decision to the owner within 30 days.

Note: the same procedure applies to renewing your classification, but you must keep the account you created initially.
