Creating low-carbon holidays in Haute-Vienne

The CRT Nouvelle Aquitaine, in collaboration with the region’s départements and tourist offices, is working hard to offer tourism that adapts to societal challenges.

The aim is to offer future visitors an idea for a low-carbon stay, from the moment they leave home to the moment they return, including all the traveler’s issues: means of transport, catering, accommodation, activities, etc.

LIMOUSIN nouveaux horizons recently joined the project and has already posted 2 ideas for stays. 🍃

Find out more about the project below!

What is the "low-carbon" holidays project?

The CRT Nouvelle Aquitaine has made sustainable tourism a key focus of its strategic development. Thus, in collaboration with 2 pilot destinations in 2021: Bordeaux-Gironde and Pays Basque, and MONA, the project group has built offers aimed at local customers with varied profiles: couples, families, individuals etc.

These initial “turnkey” packages were developed in partnership with tour operators specializing in hiking and biking: Alibert Trekking, Terres d’Aventure and Chamina Voyage.

Ideas for weekend getaways were also developed, based on a common frame of reference with the Agence Départementale du Tourisme 64 Béarn Pays Basque, Gironde Tourisme and the Office de tourisme des congrès de Bordeaux Métropole.

The project was subsequently extended to other regional destinations such as Dordogne, Charentes, Landes and Creuse. Today, it’s the turn of Haute-Vienne, destination Limoges, Corrèze, Brive Tourisme, the Dordogne Valley and Lot et Garonne to join the adventure.

The project in a nutshell

A “low-carbon” holiday is accessible mainly by train, and offers “slow” experiences that are meaningful and conducive to encounters, while favoring soft mobility (public transport, cycling, hiking, etc.) and highlighting local service providers committed to sustainable tourism (accommodation providers, restaurateurs, activity providers, etc.) who have implemented an environmental approach, who buy their produce from local producers, and so on.

This “low-carbon” offer takes the form of turnkey weekly stays or weekend getaways.

Each destination that joins the project takes part in a 4.5-day training course spread over the year, run by the CRT Nouvelle Aquitaine and MONA.

The destinations work together to design their own holidays, using their knowledge of tourism service providers and a repository of offers.

Ideas for stays between several destinations are being considered, to enable visitors to have a stay in several different departments.

For the Haute-Vienne department, the team made up of the Limoges, Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat and Rochechouart tourist offices and SPL Terres de Limousin, work together to come up with ideas for trips by mapping out routes, and once the trip has been built, it is integrated into the visitlimousin.com website.

Once they have been designed, these stays are posted online on the departmental tourism website that brings together the tourist offices: www.visitlimousin.com and on the website of the Comité Régional du Tourisme (CRT) de la Nouvelle Aquitaine, which lists all the low-carbon stays in the region.

Communication campaigns sponsored by the region are planned to promote the visibility of these offers.
