7.8 million overnight stays in Haute-Vienne in 2023

Dynamic tourist numbers in 2023 (Flux Vision Tourisme)

To measure tourist numbers in the département, SPL Terres de Limousin has been using Orange’s Flux Vision Tourisme data since 2019. These indicators decipher extra-departmental tourist traffic, in other words, people not residing in Haute-Vienne who have spent at least one night in the département. After the Covid years, the analysis of French and foreign travel provides an insight into the profile of tourists and day-trippers each year.

Number of French and foreign overnight stays in 2023

The year 2023 saw a significant increase in tourist arrivals, with a 4.5% rise in the number of French and foreign overnight stays.

SPL Terres de Limousin, with Flux Vision Tourisme, observed 7.8 million overnight stays* for tourists, both commercial and non-commercial**, throughout the département.

3.4 million tourists visited the département in 2023. The majority were French (61%). Foreign tourists account for a significant share at 39%.

53.5% of overnight stays were during school vacations and public holidays, i.e. 4.2 million overnight stays.

29% of overnight stays in July and August 2023. An increase of +15% compared to 2022. The summer season concentrates 45% of overnight stays over 4 months (June to September).

Key figures :

  • In Creuse, overnight stays in 2023 were 4.3 million for 95,500 commercial and non-commercial beds.
  • In Corrèze, overnight stays in 2023 were 7 million for 144,700 commercial and non-commercial beds.
  • In Haute-Vienne, overnight stays in 2023 were 7.8 million for 107,000 commercial and non-commercial beds.

* The number of tourist nights corresponds to the number of nights of occupancy combined with the number of people accommodated. ** The notion of market or non-market overnight stays refers to the nature of the accommodation: market accommodation (all accommodation for which payment is made (hotel, bed and breakfast, gîte, campsite…); non-market accommodation (all accommodation for which no payment is made (second home, accommodation with relatives, friends…).

French overnight stays in 2023 on the rise

spring and summer

Record French visitor numbers in April and May, followed by the summer season. The end of the year is marked by a slowdown in French travel to Haute-Vienne.

4.8 million French overnight stays in 2023 (+ 4.3%); 4.6 million in 2022

The summer season is the period with the highest number of French tourist overnight stays. It accounts for 29% of total overnight stays.

The pre-season (April, May, June) brings in significant flows. They represent 25% of annual overnight stays in 2023.

The off-season (September, October) also sees a significant flow (1.4 million overnight stays), but down on 2022.

Late season (April, May, June, September, October) accounts for 41% of all French overnight stays in 2023 (around 2 million overnight stays).

The high number of visitors in April, May and the summer months clearly illustrates the tourist activity that makes Haute-Vienne such a popular tourist destination.
