Information on the classification of furnished accommodation

If you have a gîte or apartment for seasonal rental, you can apply for a star rating. What are the advantages, and how can you get your property classified? Follow the guide!

Star rating

With tourist clientele becoming ever more demanding, and the range of accommodation on offer growing all the time, star ratings provide a reliable benchmark for the quality of the service provided. The classification criteria take into account the level of comfort of the facilities, the quality of the services offered in the establishment, as well as practices in terms of respect for the environment and welcoming customers with disabilities.

Classification of tourist accommodation is optional and voluntary. Classification is expressed in stars, from 1 to 5, and is awarded for a renewable 5-year period. It is awarded by accredited inspection bodies and approved local organizations.

Why classify your accommodation?

  • Reassure your customers: in an age when false advertisements for accommodation are circulating on the Internet, and there is great diversity in terms of accommodation quality, classification enables customers to assess the level of quality of the accommodation they are looking for, as well as the various services they will have access to.
  • Evaluate your establishment: as an owner, classification gives you precise information on the strengths and weaknesses of your furnished accommodation in relation to your customers’ expectations.
  • Benefit from tax advantages: at present, a 71% tax allowance is granted for classified meublés de tourisme. However, a bill is in the process of being voted on, and this tax allowance is likely to change (02/2024). It would appear that this change will not affect 2023 revenues.
  • Cashing vacation vouchers: by signing a (free) agreement with the Agence Nationale des Chèques Vacances, you can accept vacation vouchers as a method of payment, which can set you apart from other existing offers. Nearly 11 million people receive vacation vouchers from their employer.
  • Simplify tourist tax calculation: the rate is no longer calculated as a percentage of the rental price. The tourist tax rate is now a fixed rate, to be applied per night and per person (the rate varies according to the level of classification and the local authority to which you belong – contact your local Tourist Office).
Note: classification lapses in the event of a change of ownership. A new audit is required.
