Le Dorat

Le Dorat is a town classified as a “Petites Cités de Caractère®”. Capital of the former province of Basse-Marche, its heritage is exceptional. Along streets steeped in history, discover the importance of this religious and intellectual city fortified in the XVᵉ century.

The shepherdess door

The Porte Bergère is the only fortified gate in Haute-Vienne. Dating from the 15th century, it is known as the “Bergère” gateway, probably due to the herdsmen who once used it. It is located to the west of the ramparts, on the most inaccessible side of the hillside, and still retains its defensive systems.

The Porte Bergère was classified as a Historic Monument in December 1984, and much of the restoration work has now been completed.

The Saint-Pierre collegiate church

The collegiate church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens (XIIᵉ-XIIIᵉ) is the largest collegiate church in central France. Fortified in the XVᵉ s. at the same time as the city of Le Dorat, the collegiate church houses the relics of Saint Israël and Saint Théobald, celebrated during the septennial Ostensions (U.N.E.S.C.O).

To discover: Sainte Anne crypt, lantern tower surmounted by the gilded angel from the XIIIᵉ.s, Tour Notre Dame, Portail St Pierre.

Inside: monumental staircase, pre-Romanesque baptismal font, contemporary furnishings, reliquary shrines…
