Châteauponsac

Nicknamed the “Pearl of the Gartempe”, this village with its rich medieval past, perched on a rocky spur, dominates the Gartempe valley and offers magnificent views.

In the picturesque alleyways

This ancient fortified town still boasts a number of medieval monuments, including a Benedictine priory, a Romanesque church and a Roman bridge. Stroll through the faubourg du Moustiers, a historic district and one of the town’s most picturesque, whose houses were built on the crest of the rocky spur, was once populated by small traders and craftsmen. The most typical houses are those with external staircases.

The Roman bridge and the Roman road.

The bridge was built by monks in the 11th century. Threatened with collapse, it was completely restored in 1609 and again in 2011. It takes its name from the fact that, in Gallo-Roman times, a bridge existed on its site. This bridge, probably made of wood, provided access to the ancient Roman road that winds through the woods at the bridge’s exit on the right.

Why is Châteauponsac a must-see?

Built on a rocky spur, Châteauponsac offers superb panoramic views over the Gartempe valley, the river that flows peacefully through the commune. Another marvel is the terraced gardens overlooking the valley, which explain why the town is nicknamed the Pearl of the Gartempe.
