Bellac

Bellac is located at the gateway to the Monts de Blond in northern Haute-Vienne. A city of character and the birthplace of Jean Giraudoux, Bellac offers a wide range of cultural, leisure and recreational activities. Its history is told through its picturesque streets, parks and gardens on the banks of the Vincou river.

Getting lost in old Bellac

At the foot of Notre Dame de Bellac, let yourself be lost in the maze of passages and alleyways that reveal the town’s long history. The Penitents’ chapel, Consul Génébrias’ tower, hide drying shed…

And if you’re feeling curious, head for the church, which houses a shrine listed as a “Monument Historique”. The shrine is decorated with twelve domed medallions in champlevé and enamelled copper, inspired by the Gospel. It is a unique example, with no posterity.

The Stone Bridge, 700 years of history.

Since the 13th century, merchants have used this bridge to carry heavy traffic to the seigneury of Mortemart. Salt, sea fish and Charente wines were transported from the Saintonge coast along this medieval trade route.
