Must-see places in and around Saint Auvent

In the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin, hidden treasures await you in the heart of nature, at the turn of a village… somewhere in Haute-Vienne. We’ve put together a list of Ouest Limousin must-sees for you to discover, try out or visit!
A quick of a view

1. The "Little Lourdes in Limousin".

Sanctuaire Notre Dame de la Paix in Saint-Auvent

A veritable treasure trove hidden away in the Gorre valley, the Notre Dame de la Paix site is just a stone’s throw from the village, as if out of time. It’s the ideal place for a quiet stroll, a moment of relaxation or méditation🧘‍♀️, or simply to cool off in summer.

Steeped in a rich religious history and with a rock reminiscent of the grotto at Lourdes, the estate is dotted with small monuments and statues, and is the site of major annual pilgrimages. Signs provide cultural information.
Past the charming little bridge, listening to the gentle sound of water in the rocks 😌, you’ll discover a chapel like no other: the charm of its architecture won’t leave you indifferent!

Take pleasure in discovering this place with the “History and Nature” walking trail, the Terra Aventura course “the perinqueta’s new challenge”, trail training on the Way of the Cross, a moment of quiet fishing… to each his own discovery!

2. Château de Brie

in Champagnac-la-Rivière

A Sunday in the countryside… is an excellent excuse to head off to Champagnac la Rivière, to discover the Château de Brie. On the Richard the Lionheart tourist trail, this 15th-century fortified house is also a family residence: the family who own the château welcome you into their home! 🤗

During the tour you’ll appreciate the charm of its flamboyant Gothic staircase made of 100% Limousin granite. You’ll also be able to project yourself back in time and imagine yourself in the shoes of a knight or a damsel.

A second visit to the “little world of automata” in the estate’s barn will delight young and old alike, all set in the heart of a verdant park on the edge of the Périgord Vert region.

3. The greenway in Limousin

from Oradour-sur-Vayres to Châlus

This greenway is a 13 km stretch of former railway track. From Oradour sur Vayres to Châlus, passing through Champagnac la Rivière and Champsac, you’ll come across cyclists, hikers, rolleurs…

Green energy will be your only fuel as you walk, run or cycle along one of the few flat trails in the Limousin 😉 (okay, we admit, every now and then it’s a bit flat, but we’ve tested it: it’s easy 😅).

It’s the perfect place to gently stretch your legs and enjoy the surrounding nature. The path is lined with trees, and dotted with pretty things: old gatekeeper’s houses, wild orchids, views of the countryside and wheat fields… No doubt you’ll enjoy taking a stroll along it to clear your mind and body!

4. Lake Saint-Mathieu

in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin

Come and discover the bucolic charm of this corner of the countryside in the heart of Périgord-Limousin. Take advantage of the many activities on offer at Lac de Saint Mathieu: in summer, of course, there’s swimming, paddle-boarding, pedal-boating, mini-golf, volleyball, pétanque and games on the beach, not to mention fishing and country picnics.

Whatever the season, you’ll appreciate the beauty of the site and its surroundings thanks to the 6 hiking trails from 13 to 45 km starting from the lake, or by going there to fish in peace and quiet. 🎣

5. The Hemp and Glove Museum

in Cognac-la-Forêt

A small museum in the heart of a Limousin village is well worth a visit. This former workshop dedicated to the art of glove-making houses a permanent exhibition on the know-how of the hemp and glove-making trades. A must-see during the summer season, you can discover :

  • glove-making stages (tools, machines, skin processing, etc.)
  • hemp, from farming to clothing and housing
  • high-quality temporary exhibitions on the environment, flora and fauna, etc.

A passion for nature and the preservation of local heritage make this somewhat unusual place a place to discover authentic Limousin.

6. Pouge pond

in Saint-Auvent

This is the place to be for nature lovers! Observe the birds, the flora, learn new things on the interpretation trail… 28 hectares of unspoilt nature for oxygenation and moments of well-being.

The 6 km tour of the pond, the hilly and slightly wild surrounding trails, fishing, the arrival of the purple heron on the water… The riches of this haven of peace in Haute-Vienne will amaze you!🍃

7. The Richard the Lionheart Road

west of Limousin

The medieval footprint in and around Ouest Limousin is the Route Richard Coeur de Lion.

Between restoring vestiges in the heart of greenery, castles and fortified houses🏰, we’re sure you’ll enjoy stepping back in time during your visits, or stopping to contemplate a site during your walk (or mountain bike 🚵) on the Cussac paths.

Take the time to discover all that our old stones in Haute-Vienne have to tell you.
