A preserved natural site...

Classified as a Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest, the Corot site is part of the Glane Valley. In fine weather, you can admire a protected plant species along the Glane: the Royal Osmund.

The Glane rises in the Monts d’Ambazac and, over the years, has carved out a furrow in the valley, giving it a steep-sided character. The Glane flows into the Vienne a few meters after the Corot site. The outlet is just outside the town in the direction of Angoulême. If you’re patient, you’ll be able to admire the dipper. This bird loves the fast-flowing waters of the Glane.

Who charmed the master of landscape painting Jean Baptiste Camille Corot?

Many artists were seduced by this part of the Glane Valley, where the river meanders between the rocks in an exceptional landscape. The most famous of these was Jean Baptiste Camille COROT (1796-1875), who, according to a note in his notebooks, found inspiration on the banks of the Glane, where “nature is an eternal beauty”. A bronze portrait of JB Corot was mounted on a granite block in 1904. The Chalet Corot housed the painter’s studio between 1852 and 1861. It was restored in 2009.

A natural site with a rich industrial heritage

Did you know?

The Corot site has long been a coveted place where nature was controlled. Along the banks of the Glane, you’ll find the remains of once prosperous or converted buildings. In the 17th century, 12 mills were recorded on the banks of the Glane, including 4 rag paper factories. The felt industry took over in the early 20th century. The Moulin Brice is the only mill to have preserved a carding machine, which can be rediscovered during the summer season.
