The Ostensions are a septennial religious ceremony unique to the diocese of Limoges. The word “Ostensions” comes from the Latin ostendere, meaning to show, to make visible, to present. It’s when the relics of the saints are taken out of their reliquary, to be venerated by the assembled people.
Originally celebrated occasionally in special circumstances (epidemics, bad weather), they became septennial from 1519 onwards.
In 2013, the Ostensions were classified by UNESCO as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.
In Porte Océane du Limousin, 4 communes celebrate the Ostensions: Saint-Junien , Rochechouart, Saint-Victurnien and Javerdat.
In Saint-Junien, for example, a historic procession of over 1,000 figures leaves the collegiate church to accompany the Relics of Amand, Junien and Théodore through the town, decorated with thousands of flowers and the main street covered with branches symbolizing the Comodoliac forest, the birthplace of the town.
