The Tourbière des Dauges Nature Reserve

Discover exceptional nature at the Tourbière des Dauges! 🌿

Located in Saint-Léger-la-Montagne, this 650-hectare Natura 2000 site has plenty to surprise you and quench your thirst for nature and discovery, thanks to its flora and fauna 🦎🌱

🧭 It’s also an adventure playground, where young and old can explore while having fun! 🎒

Exceptional biodiversity

Going to the Tourbière des Dauges means exploring 3 million years that have formed “peat”, a highly fertile deposit due to cold and humidity (which can reach over 3 metres! ). This site offers no fewer than 2,200 animal and plant species, 127 of which are protected in France!

On the fauna side, for example, there are:

🐞 200 species of beetles (an order of insects that includes ladybirds and beetles)

🦅 many species of birds, such as the booted eagle or the black kite, but also the viviparous lizard!

🦋 300 species of butterfly…And many more

Flora-wise you may come across:

🍃 rare mosses and lichens

🌱unexpected plants such as drosera, purple heather or ivy-leaved bellflower…

Tour of the Dauges peat bog

To immerse yourself in this incredible nature, there’s nothing better than the Tourbière des Dauges hiking trail. It’s a 5km walk from Sauvagnac (green signposting, medium level).

🧭 At the start of the walk, don’t hesitate to stop and admire the astonishing landscape to your left: can you see the difference between the wetland and its wooded watershed? In the middle, heather emerges to colour the panorama, followed by rocky chaos. It is said that they are home to fairies!

🍃 As you make your way along, you’ll also spot some makeshift shelters that were once used by shepherds to protect themselves from the elements. Then, keep your balance! You’ll reach softer, wetter ground where your boots will be your best allies!

🌳 Finally, you’ll return to the woods, where many species of bog flora will cross your path. And that’s it, you’re back at the hamlet of Sauvagnac!

Why is the Tourbière des Dauges a must-see?

This exceptional nature formed over thousands of years is diversity incarnate! As you stroll around, you’ll observe multiple landscapes that are the cocoon of rare and protected plant and animal species.

To recognise them and learn a little about all the biodiversity, each year the conservatory offers around thirty guided tours to the public on a variety of themes linked to the fauna, flora, or the history of the peat bog.
