A setting of exceptional biodiversity

The Arboretum Domanial de La Jonchère Saint-Maurice offers incredible plant diversity, with over 300 species of trees and shrubs from all five continents. These include giants such as a 62-metre sequoia, a 64-metre Douglas fir and a 43-metre Japanese cedar. Other remarkable species such as the bald cypress, a century-old twisted beech and the handkerchief tree will fill you with wonder… Switch off, you’re in Limousin!

One of the oldest arboretums in France

Created in 1884 by Henri Gérardin and André Laurent, this arboretum is one of the oldest in France. Initially a reforestation nursery, then an experimental nursery, it has become a centre of excellence for the acclimatisation of exotic species. Today, its 40 hectares are home to an exceptional botanical heritage.

A travelling tree

The arboretum is home to a giant sequoia, remarkable both for its imposing size (7 m in circumference and 53 m in height) and its unusual history. Imported from California, it was transported to St Petersburg for the 1887 Universal Exhibition and then replanted in Limousin.

The main entrance to the arboretum is at 47 rue des Chevailles in La Jonchère Saint-Maurice, with a car park nearby: click here to find it.

Coming by train

The arboretum can be reached by TER line 21 “Limoges – Châteauroux”. From the city of porcelain, it’s a 20-minute journey to La Jonchère Saint Maurice station, then a 20-minute walk to the arboretum.
