Why the name Millevaches?

You’re probably wondering where the name of this natural park comes from? 🧐

This rural and agricultural territory might lead you to believe that it’s because of the presence of so many cows… but no!

Etymologically, there are two hypotheses: melo (high place) and vacua (empty, abandoned) or mille vacca (thousand springs).

Mille sources is the better-known version, as it emphasizes the strong presence of water on the plateau.💦

Lac de Vassivière in the heart of PNR Millevaches

The Parc Naturel Régional (PNR) Millevaches en Limousin covers 3 départements and almost 3,437 km2. 🍃

It covers the Millevaches plateau, which represents almost the entire Limousin mountain range, with altitudes ranging from 700 to 900 m, and includes the Mont Gargan, which peaks at 731 m above sea level. ⛰️

The PNR Millevaches lies in the south-east of the Haute-Vienne department and includes Bujaleuf, the medieval town of Eymoutiers, Nedde, the Mont Gargan, Peyrat-le-Château and the Lac de Vassivière. 💦

So you’ll pass by all the panoramas: water as far as the eye can see with the Lac de Vassivière, you’ll gain height with the Mont Gargan and its breathtaking view of the Limousin countryside and many other breathtaking panoramas that offer a different show as the seasons change. 🍁

Naturel regional parc Millevaches recognized as International Dark Sky Reserve

France’s 4th International Starry Sky Reserve (RICE) is located in Limousin at PNR Millevaches! And it’s the 19th largest reserve in the world. ✨

This distinction was awarded by the International Dark-Sky Association, which awards this label for the exceptional quality of the night sky in PNR Millevaches.

This reinforces access to the starry sky for all, the reduction of light pollution and the protection of nocturnal biodiversity. 🌌

You can come and admire 2000 stars with the naked eye thanks to its low light pollution and its 194 km² “heart zone” located in Corrèze.
