History of the castle
The Montautre site is a veritable historical treasure trove, boasting an exceptional wealth of culture down the ages. Its proximity to running water and natural resources has undoubtedly played a key role in the attractiveness of the site, from the Neolithic period right up to the present day.
Gallo-Roman remains testify to the importance of the site in ancient times, when a temple dedicated to Mercury may have been a place of worship and trade 🏛️
The construction of the castle by the Mondin family after the Hundred Years’ War marked a turning point in the history of Montautre. Thanks to François Mondin de Montautre and his rise to the royal court, the castle became a privileged witness to courtesy and power relations during the Renaissance.
The preservation of the archives📚 since 1403 and the continuity of ownership by the same family until 2000 offer an invaluable wealth of information: lifestyles, traditions and the social developments of the lesser nobility in the Comté de la Marche.
