Top 8 natural sites to visit

Discover Limousins hidden treasures with incredible hikes through our unspoilt natural areas. Follow picturesque trails, breathe in the fresh air and marvel at the wild beauty that surrounds you.
A quick of a view

1. Chemin des platanes

Chéronnac

Embark on a nine-kilometer hike along the banks of the Tardoire River to discover its many treasures.

As the name suggests, the hike leads you to three magnificent plane trees over 250 years old (one of which is listed, with its 40-metre span and 6-metre circumference) and four yew trees whose branches form a remarkable canopy of vegetation. The site is classified as a Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest, and it’s easy to see why once you’re there!

To conclude this charming stroll, you can drive through the small village of Peyrassoulat. As you stop to visit the village, you’ll realize that its houses surround its church, like a wall protects its castle. And no wonder: it’s built on the site of a chapel, itself built on a motte castrale. The remains of an ancient forge that once operated in the Middle Ages can still be found here.

2. Pouge pond

Saint-Auvent

If you love animal watching, a tour of the Etang de la Pouge is a must!

Thirty-two hectares of water are home to the remarkable wealth of flora and fauna in the Limousin. The pond is part of the departmental network of Espaces Naturels Sensibles and the European network of Natura 2000 sites.

Discover it by following the 2.5km interpretation trail, observing the fauna at the ornithological observatory: without disturbing them, it enables you to observe the many birds present on the pond according to the season (grey heron, common sandpiper, great egret, great crested grebe, common teal, coot, kingfisher, etc.).

You can also fish on its banks. The pond is teeming with fish such as carp, tench and roach.

3. Epagne forest

Sauviat sur Vige

The Massif d’Épagne is a geological exception within the Limousin and has been classified as a Nature 2000 site.

This 450-hectare site, located between the Creuse and Haute-Vienne departments, is home to gabbro, a magmatic rock dating back six hundred million years. As it decomposes, this rock creates soil with a neutral pH, which in turn leads to the development of plants that are unusual for our region, such as anemone, bear’s garlic, periwinkle and others… as well as the presence of species such as otters, salamanders and black woodpeckers.

A twelve-step interpretation circuit awaits you, explaining the ecosystem of the site and how it is preserved.

(Be careful not to pick any of the plants in this unique spot!)

4. Dauges peat bog

Sauvagnac

Just 30 km north of Limoges lies the Dauges peat bog nature reserve, a basin covering some 200 ha and home to numerous natural environments, including a remarkable peat bog teeming with life.

The formation of this peat bog dates back 12,000 years. Excessive water, cold and the acidity of the environment stopped the decomposition of organic matter, allowing sphagnum moss to accumulate to form peat.

Over 2,200 species have been recorded here. Of these, 127 are protected in France and nine are rare in Europe.

So, along the way, you’ll be able to meet (with a bit of luck) numerous animal species. For example, viviparous lizards, beetles, butterflies, booted eagles, hen harriers, black kites, slugs, green woodpeckers, forest cats and more.

5. The damselfly trail

Bussière-Galant

You’re in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin on the edge of the Dordogne.

The Demoiselles trail invites you to discover a beautiful forest massif offering numerous viewpoints. The quality of the paths is appreciated (beautiful sunken paths winding through chestnut coppice). More than half the route is in the shade.

The village of Saint-Nicolas-Courbefy opens its doors to you with its unexpected architectural heritage, well worth a visit (beautiful little chapel and a house dating from 1832). The ancient village of Courbefy will whet the curiosity of some.

Don’t miss the fountains just before you reach Courbefy.

6. Moors of the Butte de Frochet

Val d'Issoire

Discover the lande de Frochet, a place full of legends and, above all, flora and fauna!

The lande de Frochet (classified as a Zone Naturelle d’Intérêt Ecologique, Faunistique et Floristique) is a very special landscape site, whose constitution is linked to the largest quartz outcrop in the region. Part of the site consists of a vast rocky chaos forming a heather-covered ridge, offering a magnificent view of the neighboring Charente.

This large moorland complex is integrated into a varied landscape of woodland and meadow. In addition to the legend of the mandrake, the calm of the site is much appreciated by birds that love open environments. Typical heathland bird species such as the Hen Harrier and the Common Nighthawk breed here.

7. Vienne gorges trail

Eymoutiers

Discover the remarkable site of the gorges de la Vienne, which retains a very wild character thanks to the simultaneous presence of white water, rocks, moors and woods, and is of botanical interest.

The Vienne has wooded banks with rocky cliffs forming gorges sometimes over a hundred meters deep. Several castles have been built on the heights, such as Farsac, which can be seen during the hike.

8. Navière Island

Chaillac-sur-Vienne

This two-kilometre trail is located on one of the largest islands in Haute-Vienne. It focuses on discovering the island’s human and natural heritage.

The easy walk is dotted with small markers revealing the treasures of this part of the island. It’s an opportunity to get to know the diving cingle and the water robin, both of which can be seen during the autumn and winter migrations. Today, the island belongs to the Communauté de Communes, and is home to a farm. It is used for market gardening and livestock farming.
