Protected species on our hiking trails

Hiking in Haute-Vienne is a rendez-vous with nature, an encounter with rare species and protected fauna. Put on your hiking boots, grab your favorite camera and take your time to observe them.

Rare and
protected species

When you’re hiking in Haute-Vienne, there are certain experiences that give you butterflies in your stomach. Raise your eyes to the sky and watch the majestic flight of the peregrine falcon nesting in the Vienne gorges. Watch the agile ballet of the rhinolophus and the barbastelle. Walk along the banks of the Vige and spot traces of the passage of Lady Otter. Or wait until nightfall to hear the gentle “hoot-hoot-hoot” of the yellow-bellied toad…

WILL YOU SEE THEM?
Keep your eyes peeled for the speckled flowers of martagon lilies standing proudly at the edge of forests, or the discreet rosettes of drosera, the carnivorous plant that stalks its prey in the middle of peat bogs.

Immersion in unspoilt nature

If you’re a nature lover, you’ll be in heaven in Haute-Vienne, with its 75 natural sites, 12 Natura 2000 sites and 2 national reserves… Set course for this little-known department of Limousin for your nature walks. There are 2,000 km of hiking trails to discover, with a wide variety of landscapes: wetlands, peat bogs, ponds, limestone grasslands…

Preserving natural spaces

To observe nature and its inhabitants while preserving it, don’t forget the key principles:

  • Stay on marked trails
  • Avoid picking plants
  • Respect wild animals
  • Don’t make noise
  • Take your garbage with you
  • Get informed before you go
  • Respect quiet and breeding areas
  • Use environmentally-friendly products

May the traces of your passage be as light as a bird’s feather!
La Nature du Limousin thanks you! 💚
