When you think of Limousin, you think of porcelain. But this exceptional land hides many other treasures…

Among them, an art born from the fusion of glass and metal: Limoges enamels. Mastered since the Middle Ages, this unique skill has never ceased to exist.

From medieval champlevé to contemporary creations, it’s a living heritage, a blend of tradition and daring. So let yourself be surprised… ✨

The origins of a prestigious art form

The first enamelling technique dates back to the Middle Ages: champlevé.

The principle? Make fine cavities in a copper plate, then fill them with coloured powders before firing. 🎨

Unrivalled expertise

In the XIIᵉ century, Limoges established itself as a major centre for the arts of fire.🔥

On a copper plate, the alchemy works: silica, oxides and pigments mingle, then the heat reveals the deep, vibrant colours of the enamel.

Exported throughout Europe, this expertise has shaped the identity of Limousin from generation to generation.

A new technique

During the Renaissance, painted enamels came to the fore with scenes inspired by Antiquity.

Mythological figures, allegories and rural landscapes gradually replaced liturgical themes.
