Choosing the right lake

At Limousin, water is everywhere… and every body of water offers a different experience. Before you cast your line, take the time to choose the spot that suits you best.

Each site has its own characteristics: depth, current, bank configuration, species present, accessibility… Some courses are easy to access, close to car parks and suitable for beginners. Others will appeal to more experienced anglers looking for unspoilt natural environments.

Choosing the right water means adapting your outing to your level, the season and the species you’re looking for. It’s also about ensuring you have a pleasant experience, in complete safety, in a setting that meets your expectations.

Have a valid fishing licence

To fish at Limousin, you need a valid fishing licence. It authorises you to fish in compliance with the regulations and helps to preserve the aquatic environment.

A fishing licence is not just an administrative formality: it helps to fund the management of rivers and lakes, maintain riverbanks and protect species. By taking out a fishing licence, you become involved in the life of aquatic environments 🌿

There are several types of card, depending on your age, the length of your stay and the type of fishing you do (day, week, year, etc.). Whether you’re a regular angler or on holiday for a few days, there’s a card to suit you.

So before you go out, remember to check that your card is valid and corresponds to the territory and period concerned.

Discover fishing techniques

Beyond the choice of water, fishing is also a question of technique. Each method requires the right equipment, precise movements and a good understanding of the environment.

Shore fishing for a simple and friendly approach, spinning for stalking predators, fly fishing for a more technical and immersive approach… 🌊
Each technique corresponds to a particular desire, level of experience and species sought.

Discovering different methods allows you to better understand fish behaviour, adapt your strategy according to the season and explore new environments. In lake, river or pond, the sensations are never the same.

Whether you’re a curious beginner or an experienced angler looking to improve your skills, taking the time to choose the right technique makes all the difference.

No kill

No kill, also known as “catch and release” fishing, involves releasing fish after they have been caught. The aim is to preserve fish populations while continuing to enjoy your passion.

Increasingly widespread, this approach is based on a simple principle: enjoy the moment, the action, the technique… without catching the fish. It’s part of an approach that respects the aquatic environment and encourages the reproduction and survival of species 🌿

Some courses are entirely dedicated to no kill, while others may allow or encourage it for certain species. It’s a different way of fishing, based on experience and transmission.

By adopting no-kill fishing, you’re playing an active role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems and the quality of fishing for years to come!

How do you measure a fish?

Correctly measuring a fish is an essential step, particularly in order to comply with the minimum catch sizes laid down by regulations.

Measurements are taken from the tip of the head (point of the snout) to the longest end of the tail. The fish should be laid flat on a smooth, stable surface to ensure accurate measurement.

Ideally, use a fishing rod. Before measuring, remember to wet it to preserve the fish’s protective mucus. This accessory is highly recommended: regulation sizes are checked with great precision (to the nearest centimetre), and a difference of just a few millimetres can make all the difference.

Sizing gauges are available from specialist tackle shops. Easy to carry, they allow you to measure your catch quickly and accurately, right at the water’s edge.

Respecting the right size means protecting the resource and guaranteeing the reproduction of species.

How do you handle a fish properly?

Handling a fish with care is essential, whether you are practising no kill or simply need to measure it before making a decision.

Before any contact, wet your hands thoroughly. This preserves the mucus that covers the fish and protects it from infection. Avoid dry or rough surfaces: if possible, use an adapted landing net, ideal for securing the catch while limiting stress and injury.

When holding the fish, never put your fingers in the gills. Hold the fish firmly but gently, supporting its body.

If you want to take a photo, prepare your camera in advance to limit the time you spend out of the water. A few seconds is enough.

When you return the fish to the water, hold it upright, facing the current, and accompany it until it swims back out on its own. This simple gesture helps the fish recover and increases its chances of survival.

Handling with care means respecting the environment and contributing to quality fishing for all 🌿
