Lorine Caumartin spent ten years in Japan, where she was introduced to Japanese ink painting (sumi-e or suibokuga) by her friend Yumi Mizusawa. She also took classes with masters Suiko Ohta and Ihara Yuzan. She also learned the technique of underglaze porcelain painting (Nabeshima) from master Sakai. On her return to France, Lorine wanted to share the techniques of sumi-e, a Zen discipline centred on contemplation and spiritual exercise, as well as Ikebana, a Japanese floral art that evokes the balance between heaven, earth and man. She sometimes adds a touch of color to her ink. Lorine has taken part in numerous exhibitions, both in Tokyo and in France, and is delighted to pass on her passion for these Zen and contemplative practices.
