5 ideas for discovering contemporary art in Haute-Vienne

You’re probably thinking that to discover contemporary art, you have to go to the big cities or world capitals? But did you know that here in Limousin, between town and country, there are places where you can enjoy permanent or temporary exhibitions in exceptional locations all year round? Follow us as we share our ideas for discovering contemporary art and artists…
A quick of a view

1. Between art and industry

The Research Center for the Arts of Fire and Earth

In 1993, the CRAFT was founded in Limoges as a “laboratory of ideas”, with the principal mission of giving the use of ceramics a unique place in contemporary art.

A workshop for research and contemporary creation, the “Centre de recherche sur les arts du feu et de la terre” invites creators from all over the world (designers, artists, architects, etc.) with varied practices to reinvent and develop projects around the ceramic material.

The association organizes and participates in exhibitions and conferences, artists’ meetings and guided tours of its studio to promote its actions, contemporary ceramic creation and resident artists.

2. On an island in the heart of the Limousin

Center international d'art et du paysage

Located on the island of Vassivière, the Centre International d’Art et du Paysage supports research, experimentation, production and dissemination of contemporary art.

Unique in the French artistic landscape, the art center is known for its remarkable contemporary architecture designed by Aldo Rossi and Xavier Fabre, its permanent open-air collection, and its program of exhibitions, residencies, editions and events exploring art and landscape.

Located on the Millevaches plateau in the heart of the Limousin, it is firmly rooted in its rural context, while forging national and international links.

3. A castle as a setting

Musée d'art contemporain de la Haute-Vienne, Rochechouart

Over the past thirty years, the Musée d’art contemporain de la Haute-Vienne has built up a first-rate collection of over 1,300 works.

Since the museum opened in 1985, groups have been organized around the major historical movements that emerged in the late 1960s, particularly those exploring the links between nature and culture, and Land Art. Similarly, representative groups have been formed around English sculpture and the continuities and discontinuities of painting.

Major figures in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art have also served as the nuclei of a collection that continues to focus on the most contemporary creations.

4. In the heart of the Petite Cité de Caractère of Eymoutiers

Espace Paul Rebeyrolle

Designed by architect Olivier Chaslin, the Espace Paul Rebeyrolle was inaugurated in 1995. A unique, spacious and luminous space, this art center houses a permanent collection of over 80 works from 1948 to 2005, among the most significant of Rebeyrolle’s work.

The collection has been enriched over the years, and presents paintings and sculptures in impressive formats, expressing all the senses and the generosity of the materials.

Exhibitions, workshops, concerts and other events are offered throughout the year.

5. Art and books

Center des livres d'artistes, St Yrieix la Perche

The Centre des livres d’artistes has been based in Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche since 1994. It is a repository for an extensive collection of artists’ books, both in terms of number and quality, and an exhibition venue, the only one in France to show exclusively this type of publication. A bookshop was opened in 2007.

The Centre des livres d’artistes has three main missions: to build up and manage a collection; to promote the collection in and outside the region; and to set up workshops for the general public to raise awareness of contemporary art through books.

France’s third-largest collection in terms of size and quality (alongside that of the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Bibliothèque Kandinsky – Centre Pompidou), the collection currently comprises some 6,000 works: books, magazines, posters, prints, postcards, CD-ROMs and DVDs.
